There is a formula written on a sticky note, stuck to my computer monitor. It's been here for over four months, and I have no idea what it means.

CJ = s6 + ASbft

Naturally, malnpudl immediately concluded that this needs to be a fic prompt.

THEREFORE: You are hereby challenged to write a story explaining or otherwise interpreting this formula: CJ = s6 + ASbft

RULES: Any fandom or crossover; RPF is welcome. How many scientists in our beloved fandoms would love to solve the equation for the mysteries of life? Legion, legion! Fred, Willow, Mac, Sam Carter, McKay, Zelenka...what about Fiona and a new formulation for explosives, Torchwood, the Doctor, anyone in Eureka...the possibilities are endless. Minimum 500 words. Standards, you see. malnpudl has them.

Dick Casablancas wasn’t nearly as stupid as people thought. Lazy? Yes. Stupid? Only by choice. People got away with treating him like a Golden Retriever because it was easy, and Dick has always liked the easy way out.

But that didn’t mean he couldn’t hear them when they whispered, the talk of teenaged transportation terrorists and the perpetual wondering whether he was anything like his brother, or his father, or his missing-but-presumed-dead-hottie of a step-mother. Dick sometimes wandered through an alcoholic haze wondering if Beaver and John Candy were having a laugh up there in crazy person heaven. How the Beaver only needed a train to complete the set, and keeping score: one plane, one automobile, countless bodies.

His brother was nothing if not efficiently motivated.

Dick wasn’t anything like anyone, and that was the way he liked it. Because if he decided to make something of himself one day, to be a real Casablancas instead of just a Dick, he might just find out that he had more of his father and brother in him than he would like. A bit of embezzlement here, some explosives, mayhem and murder there, and he’d be a chip off the old block.

So it was easier to ignore the looks, the brush-offs, the suspicions, and just down another beer. Because the day he decided to sober up and make something of himself was the day everyone was gonna sit up and take notice.

Hell, they might even have to run for cover.

Logan never thought he’d be the guy with a savior complex. Survivor complex? Sure. Psychotic jackass complex? Obviously. But he never knew he was the savior type, not until Veronica.

Watching her stumble and fall—only to be pushed away when he tried to pick her up, well, that he couldn’t stand. He held out hands, threw life preservers, and gave metaphorical rescue breaths, and she only turned away.

He guessed he shouldn’t be surprised that when she finally gave him the heave-ho, or he gave it to her, or it was a mutual conflagration of mis-cued disaster, that he would find someone he could save, who would take his hands, his life preserver, his breath, and learn to live again.

It was more surprising that it was her, with her parallel traumas and un-avoidable similarities. Parker was what Veronica could have been, if she were missing the fundamental bits that made Veronica Veronica.

Every time he looked at Parker, he saw the parts that weren’t there, and he breathed little easier. He was never sure if he was her salvation, or she his, but in the end it didn’t matter. The lifeboat was big enough for both of them.

Summary: The Interludes are a series of one shot ficlets that fit with the Dance of Light main series about Cordelia. As that is essentially Cordy’s perspective on things, the readers don’t often know all of what’s going on- or they find out when Cordy does. Since every story has more than one side, I’ve decided to add the Interludes.

Each interlude will have a header letting the reader know where it falls in the series. These can be considered spoilers for everything up until that point- so the reader has been warned. The ratings will range from PG to NC-17, and this will house all smutlets as well. Some may be POV, others third person- it all depends on how the muse strikes me.

Sheriff Jack Carter knows that he is a simple man. There are rules in his life: the rules of law, the rules of parenting, and even the rules of love, often broken. He likes the black and white, the simplicity of knowing the ins and outs and whys.

Since he’s come to Eureka, things have changed. Not much, imperceptible at first: flying cars and invisible people. Things like that are definitely not simple, but they follow their own rules just the same.

His daughter isn’t simple either, and rules for her are shattered on tantrum fits of teenaged fury. It’s like deciphering a new language, the grey spaces in between context and meaning. That may have been the beginning of his evolution, learning to speak Zoe, frustrated and lost in a sea of complexity not of his doing.

But at the end, stepping into a past that wretches his world away, he wonders if he’ll be able to translate who he was and who he could have been into who he now will be.

This simple man, with rules and a firm definition of black and white, sits on the stairs of his freaky modern house, and watches his daughter walk through the door like she’s done a hundred times before, and sees nothing but grey.

He wants to tell her how wonderful she will be, but the words won’t come. There is no translation for that sort of possibility, not when he’s held it in his arms and watched her shine. So be bites his tongue and gives her the gift of familiar patterns, knowing there will be time to teach her to speak his language, as complex as hers and infinitely stronger.

For now, though, it is enough just to welcome her home.
